As most of you know, Rush Limbaugh recently felt it necessary to reunify his core listenership by reminding them how much he hates women and the idea that women might find using birth control advantageous to their health and well-being.
But it turns out there are many who hate women at least as much as Limbaugh, including Republican Texas legislators and a governor who supports their misogyny. Last time around, the GOP white men who control the Legislature slashed funding for family planning from $111 million to $38 million. According to this morning’s New York Times, those are
cuts that the nonpartisan state Legislative Budget Board estimated would eliminate services for nearly 284,000 women, lead to 20,500 additional births and cost Medicaid about $230 million. The board had recommended expanding family planning as a way of saving money.
Now, the Medicaid-financed Women’s Health Program is in jeopardy. Texas signed regulations prohibiting clinics affiliated with groups that provide abortions from receiving funds, even though the clinics do not perform abortions themselves. The federal government says excluding qualified providers in this way is illegal, requiring it to withhold $35 million — about 90 percent of the program’s financing — if the regulations, which take effect on Wednesday, are not rescinded.
That would effectively end the program, increasing the number of women without services to about 400,000.
But what do male Republican Texas legislators care if a half-million or more women are thrown under the bus? It is clear from their actions that they really don’t like women, especially poor women who can’t afford or obtain health care in the allegedly free market.
It is really hard for me to understand why any woman would vote in an election for a Republican Texas legislator (with the possible exception of Dr. John Zerwas, who actually understands the basics of health care, for women and other people).
As for Rush, I don’t get how so many media outlets could report on him calling a female law student a “slut” and “prostitute” (because she spoke publicly in favor of contraceptives for women) without mentioning Limbaugh’s apparent predilection for vacationing with the guys, in known brothel havens, while packing 100-mg Viagra super-doses for his narcoleptic trowser snake.
I mean, who knows more about what’s best for a woman’s health and reproductive well-being than an old white guy? And who’s the real slut here?
