The other day a well-regarded professor of genetics provided a fairly easy-to-understand summary of recent scientific research that reinforces past studies that show that the set of genes one is born with determines whether one will be heterosexual or homosexual. In other words, homosexuals are born, and do not for some reason choose to follow a path of homosexuality. This is nothing new to me, but it’s absolutely certain to set off howls of rage among the anti-science contingent of the Far Right.
Which includes all the elites of the Texas Republican Party. Because, as you likely have heard by now, the Texas GOP leadership voted to include a party platform plank endorsing what it calls “reparative therapy” to psychological fix all those broken homosexuals out there and turn them into unbroken hetero breeders.
See, it’s inconvenient for a party that has institutionalized the hatred of gays to believe scientific research if that research shows gays don’t have a choice but to be gay. But the solution is simple: Just deny whatever science one wishes, and label it the work of some Master Liberal Agenda. This has worked out just fine when it comes to ignoring science that shows the spewing of fumes from millions of gas-combustion engines over more than a century actually has an effect on climate, for instance.
As for reparative therapy, that has about as much chance of turning gay people straight as it would turning African and Latin Americans into frosty white crackers who vote straight-ticket Republican.
