Peanut Plunge

()

Not that it should be a huge surprise or anything, but it turns out that after the last few weeks, the price per ton for peanuts has dropped rather dramatically.

On Dec. 31, 2008, $534.75 would get you a ton of standard runner peanuts of the sort commonly used to make peanut butter. Virginia peanuts, the larger kind you buy in the shell at baseball games, was going for $537.32 a ton.

As of Feb. 11, all you’d have to shell out for a ton of runner peanuts was $449.75. And for the bigger Virginia variety? $452.32. That’s about a 16% drop in about six weeks. That’s less than 23 cents a pound for peanuts.

If you’ve ever thought about getting into the business, maybe this is the time.
