You Know It's May
When the bananas bloom. This Musa Rajapuri survived several winter freezes – down to 25 degrees – and is about to produce fruit.
I’ve never tasted these before, but growers claim they’re among the sweetest of the dessert bananas. Judging from the flower, the fruit will be much smaller than the standard grocery store varieties.
I started with three of these about a year ago. I planted the other two close to the south wall of the garage, and wrapped the main corm for protection during the cold. Those two also survived, but neither has produced fruit (just lots of pups – offshoot plants). The one that’s pictured was planted near my main vegetable garden. I had so many tropical plants I was trying to keep alive that I just let this one fend for itself. Figures that it’s the one that came out best.
Sometimes we should just leave nature to itself, I guess.
