Live Experiment: Public Airwave Blues

(Video • Video)

As you'll quickly note from the accompanying video, I have a lot of learning left to do. But that's OK, because here's the important thing: It's do-able. Web video embedded with explanatory text, together in a format allowing easy and "quick" updates by the author or authors.

I put "quick" in quotes because I have yet to determine just how quick the process can become. However, I have some new tools and ideas to play with. It's rough, but it's a start and, eventually, this is going to be cool.

This first video contains me singing a horrid little song I wrote on the spot yesterday for the express purpose of having something to shoot. I have no external mike and was trying to sing over the distorted amplified guitar, so the sound is horrid also. That's showbiz.

What I'm psyched about is the fact I was able to figure out how to use an appropriate codec on a raw .avi file, and convert it into something of manageable size while retaining reasonable quality. Still, it's a 3-minute clip weighing in at 12 megs. I don't know if that's really reasonable or not. But Quicktime starts it up with no or very little delay for the end user. I think.

If that's not the case for you, let me know via comments below.

Meanwhile, the sound quality is so awful that I'm reproducing the song lyrics below. That's part of the contextual enhancement you don't get on TV, right?

Public Airwave Blues

Went down to the broadcast station, to get my groove thing on
I needed some positive P and R just to move my career along
Commenced to knockin' on their door and sung 'em my best song
They said, What you layin' this crap on us for? Get back where you belong

(Refrain) Well they kept me off the radio, wouldn't let me on TV
But I'm pumping video through the Internet
and now there ain't no stoppin' me

Just wanted a seat at the table, wasn't after my own show
Warhol said we get 15 minutes, but Clear Channel just said no
I tried biting commentary and some witty repartee
They said, Don't call us, boy, we'll call you, now kindly go away

(Refrain)

Then I stumbled on Michael Verdi and I got my Rocket Boomed
I took 'em all back home with me into my livingroom
Wrote some RSS enclosures and I got my Quicktime on
Now I'm makin' little movies from the dusk until the dawn

(Refrain)

I warned you it was bad. And there's more where that came from.

1.Woohoo!!! That was cool!

2.12 MB for 3 min is a bit much. My 2-3 minute clips usually average 6MB using the 3ivx codec. BTW- when are you taking your act on the road??

3.Yeah, it seemed pretty big to me, too. But I’ve never done it before, so I had no yardstick.

The source avi was done in premier (I’m stuck in a Windows world – or Linux) and I converted it to .mov with Quicktime. I used 3ivx with the settings Michael Verdi recommends in his tutorial.

I’m thinking, though, that it might be the audio. I did it in stereo at 48000 mHz, and considering no good mike and plenty of distortion in a low-ceiling room, mono at 32000 probably would’ve made more sense.

I wonder if that would account for the file bloat?

4.OK, I re-edited this puppy at 32000 mono, and it knocked the file size down some – from 12 megs to 11.2 – but not as much as I’d like. Gives me one more thing to fiddle with.

5.Awe man I LOVE IT!!! Sweet stuff here, give us more!
