Trials & Tribulations
of an Aspiring Texas Fruit Farmer

Pickup Springtime

( • )

Nick and Em are playing in the back of the pickup while I tend to a smoking chicken. Em has only begun taking the occasional step, so the truck bed is like a big outdoor playpen for her. Perfect, as long as every single twig, leaf and speck of dirt has been removed.

Otherwise she finds and eats them like the world’s most voracious dust-buster.

She’s comfortable in there; the truck’s been serving as a babysitting aide since she was a couple of months old.

She’s a native Texan. It’s kind of a requirement.
